A little bit about my artist in residency program…
Poetry in Motion Program was founded through a love of dance and American heritage in one of it’s purest art forms. Jazz is the music of America and the accompanying revolution of Art, Dance and Poetry that erupted soon after it’s conception in the deep south, changed our country forever. This amazing addition to America’s culture is too often glossed over in curriculum. It is our mission to see that this important time in American History is shown to students through music, history, art and writing together. We teach that rhythm is universal in all things and that there is no more obvious place to see it than in the Jazz age. Through comprehensive and engaging lessons, we teach all grades the relevance and cultural importance through cross curricular based activities. By inspiring children to think about this part of american culture, we enrich the fabric of their developing cultural experience.
All lessons and workshops are aligned with Michigan State Benchmarks and Standards. It is by our work in schools that we are able to connect with the past and maintain our positions as keepers of this valuable history. We wish for students to join us in this task.
